In short

Running since 1960, the Surin round-up brings elephants and mahouts from the Kuy communities of Surin province into the provincial town for a street breakfast, a parade and a stadium show that re-enacts historical war formations. It is the country's largest single gathering of elephants and it is also, unavoidably, a performance event involving captive animals — which is a reason some visitors go and others deliberately do not.

Go if

  • The morning street breakfast, which is free, open and the most photographed part
  • Ban Ta Klang village, where you can see the mahout community outside the festival week
  • Combining with the Khmer temple complexes at Phanom Rung and Phimai, both within a two-hour drive

Be aware

  • The welfare question is real. Performing elephants, chains and bullhooks are part of this event, and several international animal-welfare organisations advise against attending
  • Surin's hotel stock is small and fills for the festival weekend; Buriram and Nakhon Ratchasima are the fallbacks
  • The stadium show is ticketed and the good grandstand seats sell out
  • Special festival trains run from Bangkok and are heavily booked

Dates

Three days around the third weekend of November, with the street breakfast and parade first and the stadium show on the following days. Preliminary events at Ban Ta Klang, the elephant village 60km north, run for a week or so beforehand.
